Pronunciation & Spelling
None of these words rhymes with 'positive' (/ˈpɑzətɪv/), because their stressed vowels differ. They are included as spelling lookalikes: 'positive' ends in '-itive', and '-ative' words such as 'negative', 'relative', and 'creative' share a similar written pattern. In American English, the final syllable of these words is often /ətɪv/, but the stress is on the first syllable (except creative, which is stressed on the second syllable), so they do not rhyme with positive.
