In American English, 'demerit', 'ferret', and 'inherit' rhyme with 'merit' because they share the stressed /ɛr/ and final /ət/ sound. 'Spirit' and 'limit' look similar but have a different vowel (/ɪ/ instead of /ɛ/), so they do not rhyme.
