Context & Register
语域:mixed 常见场景:informal British speech、formal writing/news 通常用于英式英语,正式与日常场合都可见:正式表达如“quieten fears”,日常口语如“quieten down”。在美式英语中更常用“quiet”作动词。比较常见于书面语,口语中语气较柔和。
Pronunciation & Spelling
Brighten, frighten, lighten, and whiten all end in the spelling chunk -ten and share the suffix -en; they are pronounced with /-aɪtən/, whereas quieten is given here as /ˈkwaɪətn/, so the extra /ə/ keeps it from being an exact rhyme. Quiet /ˈkwaɪət/ and quite /kwaɪt/ look similar to quieten but sound different: quiet has two syllables and quite rhymes with "kite", and neither ends in /ən/.
