confab 表示“开会讨论”时多指非正式、小范围的商谈，且带口语或较旧的色彩；confer 更正式，通常用 confer with sb 表示与某人正式商讨，另可表示“授予（学位、荣誉等）”，而 confab 没有“授予”义。
confab 与 chitchat 都指不深入的闲谈，意思接近，但 chitchat 更口语化，更强调话题琐碎、打发时间，常作名词；confab 还能表示“就某事开会商议”，chitchat 没有这个会议义，正式商谈场合不能用 chitchat。
